Program

The Ph.D. in Materials Engineering at UIS fosters the training of high-level researchers capable of transforming the science and technology of materials. Our program integrates applied research with innovation in an interdisciplinary environment, where each doctoral student leads projects that address industrial and social challenges at both regional and national levels, with a vision toward international leadership. Our students strengthen their scientific capabilities, generate cutting-edge knowledge, and become strategic agents for Colombia’s sustainable and competitive development.

Qualified registration: Resolution of the Ministry of National Education (MEN) No. 011001 dated April 27, 2026, with a validity of 7 years.

The Ph.D. in Materials Engineering is intended for professionals in Engineering, Basic Sciences, or Geology who have a background in materials and a strong motivation for scientific and technological research. We seek candidates with analytical thinking, intellectual curiosity, proficiency in a foreign language, and a commitment to developing innovative solutions that address the challenges of industry and society. Profile

The graduate of PhD Program in Materials Engineering will be a person with a solid integral training, with skills to design and direct research projects, that enable the expansion of the frontier of knowledge of materials, their properties and applications. He will have teaching and research skills to generate and lead lines, groups and research centers in academic institutions and organizations linked to R&D&I activities.

The university has a mechanism through which the financial obligations of a student can be partially or totally covered by a company or entity that wishes to support the student.

Also, various forms of payment have been arranged so that students can combine the available forms of payment according to their particular conditions. On the page “Start registration process” you will find the available options.

Additionally, to facilitate access to postgraduate programs, the UIS has signed various agreements with entities specialized in educational credit. These agreements seek facilities and better credit conditions for UIS students.

Students who have the voting certificate from the last popular election process in Colombia may request a 10% discount on tuition fees.

Requirements

The documentation must be submitted in digital format (PDF) to the email address posgrados.materiales@uis.edu.co

Note: By clicking on the “Go to Admissions” button available in the banner below, you will find the necessary forms to complete the documentation listed below.

Required Documentation:

  • UIS application form, properly completed and signed.

  • Curriculum vitae in the UIS institutional format, including certificates and copies of documents that support the information provided.

  • Copy of a valid identity document in Colombia, or a valid passport in the case of foreign applicants.

  • Recent passport-style photo, white background, 3×4 size, preferably in digital format.

  • Copy of the diploma and degree certificate of the undergraduate program required by the doctoral program, issued by a higher education institution recognized in Colombia.

Note 1: If the degree was awarded by a foreign institution, it must be apostilled, translated into Spanish (if applicable), and validated by the Ministry of National Education of Colombia.

  • Undergraduate transcript required by the program, including the weighted GPA.

Note 2: UIS undergraduate alumni do not need to submit this document.

  • Proof of payment for the application fee.

  • Certificate of reading comprehension and written production in Spanish, issued by the UIS School of Languages (only if required by the program).

Note 3: The cost of this certification or test is not included in the program’s application fee.

  • Certification of proficiency in a foreign language at a level equivalent to or higher than A2 (according to the CEFR for languages), duly validated by the UIS Language Institute.

Note 4: This certification will not be required for candidates who:

    • Are native speakers of a foreign language, or

    • Have obtained their university degree in a foreign language, as evidenced by the submitted documents.

  • Three (3) confidential academic reference letters, sent directly by the person providing the recommendation to the graduate program coordinator (posgrados.materiales@uis.edu.co). The UIS-established form must be used.

  • A letter of endorsement issued by a research group or center at UIS, or by a scientific institution with an active cooperation agreement. This letter must be signed by the group director and must formally present the candidate to the program.
