Specialization in Internal Medicine
ABOUT THE
Program
The Specialization program in Internal Medicine of the School of Medicine, from the Faculty of Health of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) began in 1982 being a pioneer in the northeastern region of Colombia.
The excellence of this postgraduate course is reflected in the professional quality of the UIS Internist Physicians, who perform with the luxury of competencies both in Colombia and in other countries. Many of our graduates have a second specialty, carried out in reputed national university centers, where they are quickly accepted for their academic skills. They are leaders in their fields of specific professional knowledge, as well as in the teaching, administrative, and trade union fields. As a result of excellent preparation carried out in our Alma Mater, they are currently in full exercise of their work as interns or subspecialists.
The specialization program in internal medicine is based on clinical reasoning that reflects the way of thinking, proceeding, and making decisions when faced with a health problem that in our institution ranges from advanced adolescence to the elderly, “always seeking the integrality of patient care.”

The UIS Internal Medicine Specialists are integrally trained people with knowledge of the diseases of adults. Its main characteristic is clinical reasoning, which demonstrates the way it thinks, proceeds, and makes decisions when facing the problem of care.
The challenges that the medical specialist in internal medicine faces are based on being constantly updated within the framework of integrality; this necessitates a variety of competencies for its exercise, including clinical skills, clinical judgment, medical knowledge, medical care, professionalism, human and ethical qualities, acting with respect, compassion, and integrity towards the patient and their families, medical informatics, and evidence-based medicine, to name a few. The evaluation of these competencies must be a continuum in the scope of their work.
