ABOUT THE

Program

The doctorate program seeks to create an institutional scenario, within the framework of a public university, that promotes and develops philosophical research of high social and human excellence, critical or self-reflective thinking and critical pedagogy of political and humanist civic values. This in order to contribute, from the academic field, to the formation of citizens capable of understanding the political, social and aesthetic problems of today’s world, from  abroad, plural and open philosophical perspective to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary dialogue.

The doctorate in Philosophy is aimed at professionals in philosophy and professionals from any other area of knowledge. It is understood that knowledge and philosophical dialogue is not a monopoly of those who have previously had a background in the area, as philosophical debates are enriched when participants from multiple disciplines are held. This is why the doctorate is designed for every professional who wants to develop, at a postgraduate level, his critical and reflective thinking, applied to local, regional, national and global problems of political philosophy and law, philosophy and literature and technological civilization. Of course, any aspiring philosopher of training or not is expected to have the knowledge and philosophical skills needed for a doctorate program in philosophy. This will be especially evaluated in the resume, knowledge exam and interview.

GRADUATE

Profile

.

The graduate of the doctorate in Philosophy will have the capabilities of an autonomous critical and analytical researcher capable of participating in regional, national and international academic, scientific and cultural debates; all this within the framework of the personal and professional competencies achieved in the development of the doctoral training process, which, assumed from a comprehensive and complex perspective, point to the following:

  • Develop a rigorous ability to read classical, modern and contemporary philosophical texts with a view to the production of texts written in the field of their line of research in connection with the other lines of the doctorate.
  • Act in a thoughtful and critical manner with a view to exercising the social function of intellectual through the argument supported in a solid academic background and with competence to access up-to-date sources of information relevant to scientific and social interests.
  • Develop an ability to develop complex forms of critical thinking and interrelate around philosophical or interdisciplinary problems, especially related to doctorate research lines.
  • Analyse the problems of the surrounding social reality, with the ability to recognize and interpret the cross-cutting issues of all social phenomena, such as the search for meaning, social representations, the complexity of sociocultural practices and the relationship of human beings with the environment.
  • Generate scenarios and intellectual products of collective and group work, within the framework of moral and legal duties and rights, which allow the understanding of the social reality of sociocultural environments by scientific communities and by actors that affect social dynamics.
  • Propose, structure and develop research projects in the area of philosophy, the humanities, the social sciences and, in general, in all those cases where a critical and thoughtful analyst is required.
  • Produce texts (essays, critical and analytical reviews, articles, among others) showing a high degree of philosophical conceptualization applied to disciplinary or interdisciplinary problems.

* The SMMLV for 2024 is $1,300,000 Colombian pesos.

The university has a mechanism through which a student’s financial obligations can be partially or totally covered by a company or entity that wishes to support the student.

Also, various forms of payment have been arranged so that students can combine the available forms of payment according to their particular conditions. On the page “Start the registration process”, you will find the available options.

Additionally, to facilitate access to postgraduate programs, the UIS has signed various agreements with entities specialized in educational credit. These agreements seek facilities and better credit conditions for UIS students.

Students with a voting certificate from Colombia’s last popular election process may request a 10% discount on tuition fees.

REGISTRATION

Requirements

The documentation is received digitally by e-mail posgrados.filosofia@uis.edu.co in PDF format.

Note: By clicking on the “Registration” button you will find the forms to fill out the documentation requested below.

1. UIS registration form duly completed and signed.

2. Resume, it has to be done in the UIS format established institutionally for this purpose, with the attachment of the certificates and copies of documents that corroborate what is described in it.

3. Copy of valid identity document valid in Colombia or valid passport for foreigners.

4. Recent document type photo, preferably in digital format, white background 3×4.

5. Copy of the diploma or Photocopy of the undergraduate degree certificate required by the program, issued by a recognized HEI in Colombia.

Note 1: If the applicant has a degree from a foreign university, it must be duly apostilled and translated into Spanish if it is in a foreign language. The degrees must be validated before the Ministerio de Educación Nacional of the Republic of Colombia in case the applicant is going to study a master’s degree in the area of health, law or other area regulated by national regulations that require this administrative act.

6. Certificate of the grades obtained during undergraduate studies, with a weighted average equal to or higher than three point fifty (3.50), and those of the research or in-depth master’s degree programs completed.

Note 1: In the case of UIS undergraduate alumni, it is not necessary to provide it.

7. Receipt of payment issued by the UIS treasury for the current value of the registration or receipt of consignment in the account authorized by the UIS.

8. If the advisory committee so determines, proof of reading comprehension and written production in Spanish language, presenting the certificate of approval issued by the UIS School of Languages.

9. Certification of foreign language level equivalent to or higher than level A2 according to the CEFR for languages, according to standardized test or issued by the UIS Language Institute.

Note 1: This certification will not be required for those applicants who are native speakers of a foreign language or who have obtained a university degree in a foreign language, according to the description of such studies in the corresponding documents.

10. Three (3) confidential letters of academic reference, in sealed envelopes, sent directly to the graduate coordination, according to the form established by the UIS.

11. Endorsement letter from a research group or center of the UIS or from a scientific institution with which there is an agreement in force, signed by the director of the same, and in which the applicant is presented to the program.
