RESEARCH

Specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics

ABOUT THE

Program

This program encompasses the knowledge of normal and abnormal aspects from the biological, psychological, and social point of view of women during their childhood, adolescence, reproductive age, and post-reproductive period, and it is increasingly advanced in the knowledge and care of reproduction, cancer, aging, and new diagnostic imaging technologies. Surgical treatments such as endoscopy, promotion, and prevention policies are some examples of the complexity of the study and treatment of physiological and pathological phenomena related to women’s sexual and reproductive health.

Therefore, the Specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics, as a program with a practical and investigative academic character, aims for a formation where the graduate has the capacity to intervene in sexual and reproductive health policies, in the promotion, prevention, medical and surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of the main health problems of the female population in all stages of their life cycle related to the field of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

GRADUATE

Profile

.

Our specialization is the product of the hard work of countless people who have contributed to the formation of a human group dedicated to the work of caring for women who are seen in the consultation room, emergency room, or on the fifth floor of the Hospital Universitario Ramón González Valencia.

The Gynecology and Obstetrics program of the UIS has not redefined the profile of the graduate, since it has not completed its self-evaluation process. It is necessary to analyze with serenity, responsibility, transparency, suitability, and equity the two trends in the specialty and consider the expectations of the residents, the needs of the community, and the improvement of the quality of the postgraduate program and the lives of women and their families.

These trends that are being discussed are not only local but also in the academic world. There is the gynecobstetrician who only attends to problems of high complexity through the interconsultations of primary care physicians, attends only to problems related to the reproductive apparatus that exceed primary care, and in short tends to be a subspecialist. The second trend, which is more widely accepted, shows a specialist who is dedicated to the care of older population groups, performs preventive and health promotion actions, and solves problems on an outpatient basis with a general approach.
