ABOUT THE
Program
The Master’s Degree in Geology of the School of Geology of the UIS is a program with an emphasis on Research, establishing as its purpose the training of professionals with a relevant scientific vocation to analyze, evaluate, diagnose and provide solutions to basic and applied problems related to Earth Sciences.
The Master’s program in Geology aims to offer a space for training of high academic level around the problems derived from different areas of application of earth sciences such as: studies of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits, petrology, environmental geology, geochemistry, geophysics stratigraphy and structural geology. In this way, it contributes to the strengthening of the professional and/or research capacity of professionals who work in these areas of knowledge.

The fields of study of the master’s degree are:
- Analysis and prevention of geological risks (floods, landslides, earthquakes, etc.).
- General and specialized geological cartographies and their application to territorial planning, large civil works, geotechnics, evolution of coastal areas, etc.
- Study of fossil organisms and application of them for dating, ancient and recent environmental variations, etc.
- Structure and properties of rocks and minerals, application of the same (construction, ceramics, conservation and restoration of monuments, etc.,).
- Prospecting and exploitation of natural resources: fossil fuels (hydrocarbons and coal); water resources (groundwater), metallic and non-metallic minerals, industrial and ornamental rocks.

The academic, personal and motivational characteristics that an applicant to the Master’s program in Geology should have are:
Undergraduate university degree in Geology with professional registration from the Professional Council of Geology.
Curiosity and interest in the scientific and technological development of earth sciences, which must be demonstrated by submitting an essay containing a research proposal.
The capacity for synthesis, analysis and argumentation to understand and describe the natural phenomena that occur on earth.
Respect the codes of ethics of the Geology professional.
High degree of commitment and interest in research and teamwork.

Profile
.
The graduate of the Master’s Degree in Geology is a professional with the following characteristics:
Has ethical values and is committed to the social and economic development of the country in a sustainable manner.
Has the ability to plan, manage and develop research projects and/or application to the understanding of the geological evolution of the territory, to the exploration and sustainable exploitation of mineral deposits, energy resources, water resources, and the study of geological risks.
Interacts with professionals from other disciplines in solving basic and applied scientific problems.
Interprets geodynamic phenomena that occur in the earth’s crust in order to argue and propose hypotheses and theories.
Has a comprehensive training that allows him to interpret geological phenomena to structure new exploratory strategies and sustainable use of natural resources, the mitigation and / or prevention of social environmental impacts caused by the development of exploitation of natural resources and construction of civil works.

* The SMMLV for 2024 is $1,300,000 Colombian pesos.
The university has a mechanism through which the financial obligations of a student can be partially or totally covered by a company or entity that wishes to support the student.

Additionally, to facilitate access to postgraduate programs, the UIS has signed various agreements with entities specialized in educational credit. These agreements seek facilities and better credit conditions for UIS students.
Students who have the voting certificate from the last popular election process in Colombia may request a 10% discount on tuition fees.

Requirements
The documentation is received digitally by e-mail maestriageologia@uis.edu.co in PDF format.
Note: By clicking on the “Inscripción” (Registration) button you will find the forms to fill out the documentation requested below.
UIS registration form duly completed and signed.
Resume, in the UIS format established institutionally for this purpose, with the attachment of certificates and copies of documents that corroborate what is described in it.
Copy of valid identity document valid in Colombia or valid passport for foreigners.
Recent document type photo, preferably in digital format, white background 3×4.
Copy of the diploma or copy of the undergraduate degree certificate required by the program, issued by an institution of higher education recognized in Colombia.
Note 1: If the applicant has a degree from a foreign university, it must be duly apostilled and translated into Spanish if it is in a foreign language. The degrees must be validated by the Ministry of National Education of the Republic.
Certificate of the grades obtained in the undergraduate program required by the program, including the weighted average.
Note 2: In the case of UIS undergraduate graduates, it is not necessary to provide this document.
Receipt of payment issued by the UIS treasury for the current value of the registration fee or receipt of consignment in the account authorized by the UIS.

If the advisory committee so determines, proof of reading comprehension and written production in Spanish language, presenting the certificate of approval issued by the UIS School of Languages.
Notice 1: The cost of the certification or test is not included in the registration fee for the graduate program.
For research master’s degrees, certification of foreign language level equivalent to or higher than level A1 according to the CEFR for languages, according to standardized test or issued by the UIS Institute of Languages.
Notice 2: This certification will not be required for those applicants who are native speakers of a foreign language or who have obtained a university degree in a foreign language, according to the description of such studies in the corresponding documents.
Receipt of payment, issued by the UIS treasury, for the current value of the psycho-technical test (if required) or receipt of consignment in the authorized accounts.
Two (2) confidential letters of academic reference, in sealed envelopes, sent directly to the graduate coordination, according to the form established by the UIS.
Research Master’s Degrees: endorsement letter from a research group or center of the UIS or from a scientific institution with which there is an agreement in force, signed by the director of the same, and in which the applicant is presented to the program.
